Exploring Colours, Shadow and Patterns.

Lots of great learning happened in Preschool this week. The students are making connections between light and dark. How light can reflect and make rainbows and that shadows can move and change.

Oak.
Do you remember what the Oak students discovered on the light wall last week? During our third week, lots of students were curious about seeing colours by adding transparent colourful objects on the projector.  They explored colourful and dark objects on the wall by going on a treasure hunt around the classroom. How can you reflect on your science discoveries? Some of the students started to draw their shadow objects on the paper and were reflective about them. What will happen next, you will find out next Friday!

Maple.
The Maple children had so much fun watching, discussing and building up their explorations based on two great movies they have watched! Here are links to these movies and you can watch them together with your children during the weekend.
This Wednesday was the sunniest day of the week, and children found the rainbow on the light table! Later we did an experiment and tried to catch the rainbow with water and mirror. Ask the children if we succeed in it?
Another big part of our explorations were patterns. The children searched for them everywhere: in bracelets and necklaces they were making, during line up, and while singing our greeting song in the morning!

This week we had fun exploring shadows. The Preschool two age students found that you could move the shadows with light. They could make the shadows bigger and smaller. The preschool one students and toddlers found that you can make the light of a flashlight go bigger and smaller. They also found that if the light is behind you, your shadow goes on the wall.

In art with Ms Valda, we made light and dark pictures. We worked on our cutting skills and had lots of fun cutting different shapes.

New Discoveries?

The second week of exploring our new unit of inquiry "Shadow and Light" has ended. It was full of new discoveries. Have a look at what our Early Years students have been doing this week!

Oak.
Last week started with darkness at our school and figuring out how students can see when it's dark around them.  But moving one step further this week lots of students also noticed something on the bright light wall. "I see my hands." "That's me." "3 Circles." The shape of my Christmas tree moved on the wall. What could it be?  Can you guess the answer? What will happen next, you will find out next Friday!

The children continued feeling excited about their explorations and findings! We discussed sources of light and agreed that the sun brings light during the day and the moon and stars give a bit of light during the night. The children explored their flashlights and lamps, and few boys even decided to draw the flashlights. Charlotte’s daddy had an idea of making foil flowers that we could observe with flashlights. Almost everyone wanted to have a flower, so we made the whole garden.
The light table was another great tool for discoveries: it is possible to mix colours and make a new colour if you put two different colour papers over one another. White paper snowflake changes colour depending on what paper it is put on, and it looks different depending on the light being on or off. We can make fantastic ornaments on the light table if we mix transparent and dim items!

What a busy and exciting week we had in Linden class. It's hard to know where to start sharing all the great things that happened in our class. Here are some of the discoveries that stood out.
This week the focus was on day and night. The children were asked to go on night walks with their parents, and we had some great feedback about things they observed. At school, we looked at what we can see in the day and had some amazing discoveries as we noticed that it gets lighter outside as it gets closer to snack time. We found out that in the night things are dark and you can’t see easily. In the day things are light, and you can see everything. This observation led us to explore light and dark colours. Linden students learned that if you have a black paper then you can’t see black or dark colours like purple and blue, but you can see light colours like white and yellow. We can’t wait for next week to see what we can learn.
