Learning Through Fairy tales!

The second week of the unit of inquiry "Once Upon a Time" has ended. The Early Years students have discovered different fairy tales and the main characters in each story. The children's imagination and creativity have been filled with great activities!

This week the Oak students continued to explore the unit of inquiry "Once Upon a Time". Together with their teachers, they found a bag, full of magic beans. These magic beans brought children to an old English fairy tale "Jack and the Beanstalk" which has been written in the early 19th Century. Students grew and developed while taking part in activities from building castles to playing with the various puppets from Jack and the Beanstalk. On Thursday our art teacher Ms Valda visited us and children created their own puppets reflecting different emotions.

At the beginning of the week, we carved our small pumpkin and turned it into our Jack –O’- Lantern. Besides acting out our “The Princess and The Pea” fairy tale, the Maple children were focusing on different Math activities: counting, sorting, making numbers from plasticine and adding play dough in building and measuring activities!
The Grade 9 brought us their special gift – A Castle! Little students were excited to explore it! Thank you for this surprise!

This week in Linden we focused on the story of Goldilocks and the Three Bears. We started the week by exploring opposites: hard and soft. We also looked at small, medium and big and did a sorting activity with pictures of bowls, chairs and beds. We acted out the story using puppets and some of our forest treasures. We also looked at a video about real bears and then compared real and story bears. We know that real bears hibernate in the winter and they are omnivores. We also know that their babies are called cubs. Stories bears wear clothes and can talk. We painted real bears and made a collage for the forest.

Reminder: Older students are going on a field trip to the forest at ‘Bumbu Kalniņš’ on Monday, 7th of November. They will leave the school at 9:15 am and will come back at approximately 2:00 pm.
