29th January 2016

We have started a new Unit of Inquiry! It’s all about Where we are in Place and Time and is called

 Lovely Latvia

Central idea: Our host country Latvia provides a unique setting which can be used in many different ways.

Lines of Inquiry:

  • Natural and human-made features of Latvia

  • Uses of natural and human-made features of Latvia

  • The role of Latvian features within our school community

The children started to explore different items and teacher’ provocations related to the unit. They noticed changes in classroom environment and it was great to listen to their predictions what the next unit will be about! Enjoy pictures of their explorations and findings!

22 January 2016

On Tuesday we went on a sledging field trip to Dzeguškalns, a park not far from school. We took many slegdes from school and most children also brought a sledge from home, so everybody (teachers included) had enormous fun sliding down the long slope. This was also a good opportunity to learn how sharing and playing together makes a good thing even better!

After the sledding field trip the children from Maple group made an art project based on exploring the snow. They called it “Frozen”. The children were still eager to make puppets and they made their own snow men sack puppets and played with them. They also became exited playing out a story about “The Tiger Who Came to Tea”. Beginning with this week the children started to share their toys and stories at the end of the day. All these activities were initiated by the children! Great job!

Since we finished our previous Unit of Inquiry, "Puppets and Play" , we have focused more on our year-long Unit "Growing Together" this week. Please see the photos below for an impression of all the measuring, sharing and playing together happening in the Early Years:

15th January 2016 - Happy New Year!

We are back! Having enjoyed a long winter break, everybody was happy to meet their friends, teachers and students again. The first week has just flown by, exchanging memories from the holidays and just enjoying each other’s company. But naturally, great learning occurred in the process.

We were are thrilled by the snow, outside time has shifted to a whole new dimension of fun!

Indoors we reflected on the snow through different arts and craft activities and, inspired by our previous Unit of Inquiry, through dramatic play. Some great inquiries have taken place, students were fascinated to watch snow melt on the heater and to paint it with water colours.

We also welcomes two new friends in the Early Years. Emīls has joined the Oak class and Amit has joined Linden. Welcome!
