October 7 - 11

This Monday we started the new Unit of Inquiry Nursery Rhymes.  The central idea is that Nursery Rhymes tell stories in many different ways.  We will focus on different Nursery Rhymes around the world; structures and patterns of Nursery Rhymes and ways in which Nursery Rhymes are performed.  During our introduction assembly on Monday we sang some Nursery Rhymes all together and it was a lot of fun with words, pictures and puppets.
Thank you to all Preschool parents who came to the Parent/Teacher conferences this week!

Toddlers
Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, friends and relatives, we would like to announce (drum roll): Toddlers have a new favourite song and it is “Twinkle, twinkle little star”. Every day this week we have practiced singing and acting it out and soon we will be ready to present it to our Preschool friends!  It has been another happy week playing indoors and outdoors in the warm fall weather – see our pictures below!

Preschool1
During the week the Preschool 1 students learned the nursery rhyme and enjoyed singing and performing  I’m a Little Teapot!  The children were excited to colour, cut and create their own teapot that can pour tea into a cup with a saucer!  During the Library lesson the Incy Wincy Spider nursery rhyme was explored through the use of flash cards, felt board, and felt items (spider, water spout, rain, and sun).  During Art the children created colourful leaves and at the end of the week we enjoyed witnessing the signs of autumn and looking for various colours nature presents us with on a walking field trip around the neighbourhood.  The weather was splendid!

Preschool 2
In the beginning of the week we worked on developing partner skills to work together and by sharing “My body” books from the first Unit of Inquiry. The children also had to find 9 items together with a partner and present their findings to the rest of the group. During these activities we emphasized the importance of working collaboratively and acknowledged the great work they had done. On Tuesday there were all 21 Preschool 2 students at school and we managed to take a class photo with almost everyone looking at the camera! :) We spent most of the mornings on making a book for a Nursery Rhyme about a fish. The children have been busy colouring, cutting and arranging numbers up to 10 in the right order while making their books. We went to the forest on Thursday and learned a new nursery Rhyme about “Peas porridge” before eating the real porridge made on a camp fire! We learned that only edible substances such as water, milk and cream-of-wheat should be added to porridge; not sand or pine tree needles…  We collected some forest treasures to decorate our hallway for next week, but that is supposed to remain a secret until Monday!:)
