September 23-27

We all met on Monday morning for an assembly to sing a few songs about our body parts and look at some pictures that showed many different ways we use our body parts and our body as a whole.
Toddlers
This week the Toddlers have worked busily on their arts & crafts projects in the mornings. Together with their teachers they explored stickers and shapes, as well as different sponges and other tools for painting.
We had a little surprise visitor this week! A butterfly really likes the Toddler’s artwork in the hallway and keeps coming back to sit on it, as if it was a flower. See the picture below!
Preschool1
This week the Preschool 1 children worked on cutting out and putting together a My Body puzzle, as well as created a collage of My Family.  Discussions about friendship took place and the children traced hearts and verbalized to whom they would give each one of their special hearts.  The Preschool 1 students also enjoyed reviewing the line of inquiry: how we use our bodies (swimming, walking, stretching, sleeping, tip toeing, jumping, and particularly running!) through discussions and unit related books such as Richard Scarry’s First Little Learners: This Is Me.  Time outside in the rain has also been a new experience for some of our children and the exploration of puddles, and mud, have been so much fun!
Preschool 2
The Preschool 2 students this week have been exploring the new light table and playing with different coloured plastic shapes there. It has been fun to see what shape or colour you get by putting the pieces next to each other or one on the top of another! Most of the children have finished their real-size silhouettes by adding more details to them, like hats, t-shirts and even necklaces and bracelets they made in Arts with Miss Valda. The children had their first experience to share their learning with a partner this year: they presented their morning routines project to a classmate and listened to their partner afterwards. It was great to see how children’s excitement grew, performance improved, and their confidence rose with each time! On Thursday we went to the forest to explore and enjoy the woods even further: we went on an “expedition” with a smaller group of kids to see what the forest is like when we walked deeper into it. We found a wide variety of mushrooms and “trees that were smaller and more of” comparing to the side of the forest. The children made interesting people out of sticks and other forest treasures making sure that their “people” have all the body parts needed. We made some hot chocolate on a fireplace at the end of the trip and drove back to school tired but happy!

I Am A Preschool

It is clear that the Preschoolers are getting used to the school routine which include the many interesting specialist classes, transitions, and classroom activities!  One of the three lines of inquiry of our unit I Am A Preschooler are routines.   During the Monday assembly we all enjoyed watching and singing along to various songs relating to routines.  Please enjoy them at home with your child!

Toddlers
Every Friday the Toddlers enjoy their Library lessons with Miss Legzdina.  Toddlers like listening to the stories she shares, exploring the pictures in the books, and sometimes singing a song or two.

Jurijs’ mommy brought in a special surprise this week: big soap bubbles! The Toddlers had so much fun trying to catch them!  They were admiring the many colours and shapes of the bubbles. Thank you, Jurijs’ mommy!

This week all Toddlers also worked diligently on their first cooperative Toddler art project by using and exploring a wide variety of materials – crayons, pastels, markers, finger paint, stickers and our hands of course! See the fantastic result on the bulletin board in the hallway!

Preschool1
On Monday we celebrated Otto’s 4th birthday and on Friday Grigory’s 4th birthday– Happy Birthday boys!

The Preschool 1 children have been working on fine motor skill by creating self-portraits made of colourful plasticine. Outside play time continues to be very popular and the children have enjoyed exploring Marat’s doctor set!

Songs and movement are popular with the children and we have been enjoying these types of activities not only with our Music specialist Mr. Medd, but in the weekly routines and assemblies!

Preschool 2
It has been quite a busy week in Preschool 2 we have had 20 children at school on most of the days! We have received compliments like: it’s amazing how quietly and nicely pre 2 children are walking along the hallways in school! This means that the children have gotten used to the school routines and expectations in terms of appropriate behaviour! Fantastic!

On Monday we celebrated Maxim`s birthday with animators, balloons and cake outside. It was a lot of fun for all the children.

We measured ourselves to see how tall we are as preschoolers in the beginning of the school year. The children have worked on decorating their real-size paper shapes that will be used for learning about our body parts and what we use them for. During the Alphie time we learned the following sounds: /s/ /d/ /t/ and /i/. There is always a song and a short video related to each sound we listen to and watch on the SmartBoard.

Please be reminded that the first days of fall with rain, shine and some colder weather have begun.  To ensure your child’s comfort and safety, please make sure children are dressed appropriately for these weather conditions.

We hope to see many of you at the Open House event tomorrow at 4 pm!

September 9 - 13

The third week of school in Preschool has been full of exciting activities! We are very happy that all of our Preschoolers have arrived and are settling in well and have started to get used to the busy schedule and daily routine, which is part of our first PYP Unit of Inquiry (UoI) “I am a Preschooler”.

We started this week by gathering together for an assembly on Monday morning. Preschoolers had a chance to sing some songs together about school and home. We ended our assembly with an open discussion about what is home and what are the things we have and do at home, as well as how is home different from school.

Tuesday and Wednesday were the whole school photo days, when the photographer came and every child had the chance to look smart and smile at the camera. Now we just can’t wait for those pictures to arrive!

Toddlers
Toddlers had a wonderful chance to enjoy the sunny weather outside every day. We began and ended every day outside on the playground, exploring the toys and discovering new friends in Preschool. We heard some of our little students saying: ”Look! Sky! It’s sunny! Let’s go! Play!”
Toddlers have lots of fun during Mr Medd’s music lessons twice a week and are eager to sing along the “Wheels on the bus”, “I’m a happy Preschooler”, “Head, shoulders, knees and toes” as well as several other tunes, which our Music teacher  plays on his ukulele. Toddlers also have learned to sing the “Clean up song”, as well as the “Bye-bye song”, which have become part of our daily routine.
On Wednesday Toddlers celebrated Miss Britta’s birthday with a twist and in style! Toddlers enjoyed drawing Miss Britta, sang “Happy Birthday” several times and finished the day with a great ice cream party outside in the sunshine.

Preschool1
The Preschool 1 children have continued to enjoy some additional outside time in the mornings and have demonstrated their bike riding, climbing, and shovelling skills in various games they have initiated.
The children continued to explore the concept of Big, medium, and small and worked on a project involving stacking apples of various sizes on to each other.
The children continue to learn about the Preschool routine and are familiarizing themselves with the sequence of the calendar circle time activities.  The line leader has also started to learn how to bow down (and the audience to applaud) when the line leader has finished his/her counting and presenting! We are also learning new songs and games as time goes on.

Preschool 2
On Monday the Preschool 2 children were excited to start the SfA program by meeting Alphie, the crocodile puppet that speaks the special language called ‘Alphie talk’. We will be learning the letter sounds and listening to the sounds in words as well as trying to blend sounds in real words during this semester.  We will also learn to write letters the proper way using the letter cues.
Preschool 2 went out on their first Waldkinder field trip this school year!  They explored the paths, explored the environment and nature, rescued lizards and frogs, swung on ropes, built stick houses, discovered sand dunes and used cameras to record our discoveries. We also celebrated the first birthday this year: Happy Birthday, Oliver! Since we are learning about getting used to settling into a new community, we finished the week by coming together with students from Kindergarten and Grade 4 for making some Smores together.

Reminder: As ISR afterschool activities have begun, please be reminded that the pick-up time for those children who have afterschool activities is no later than 4:00 pm.
