Let's Grow Together!

During our Preschool assembly on Wednesday we got into the Valentine’s Day spirit by singing some upbeat Valentine’s Day songs.  The children also participated in a game where they had to share a red shiny heart with a child from the larger group. On Friday, two important events took place. We had “The Teddy Bear Hospital” visit Preschool and hold a child-friendly workshop about health and hygiene. It was the only available day for the students of Stradiņu University to visit us, and since it is free of charge, we decided to schedule the event. We took many pictures to share with those children not present. Several emergency stations were set up and the doctors-to-be helped our students to care for the sick soft toys and dolls. It was great fun both for the visitors and our children. The second event was sharing the friendship flowers that the children had purchased for each other to recognize friendship and a sense of togetherness. They were very proud and happy to both give and receive the colorful carnations!

This week was another busy week filled with love and friendship in the Toddlers class. We were making Valentine day’s paintings, lacing and decorating hearts and singing songs about love with other Preschoolers! We also played a memory game ,,Which shape is Missing?’’. Toddlers were so excited to find out so much about the circle, diamond, and triangle and they also learned new shapes –  heart and square! Toddlers also worked on recognizing numbers up to 5, and we are happy to let you know that some of them can recognize numbers up to ten already!  During Smart board lesson children were learning to sort things by colours. Together all Toddlers made a friendship picture sharing hearts on the smart board (drawing a heart for each toddler). Mr Medd was visiting Toddlers during their music lesson and children enjoyed singing together and showing little performances with him.  The little ones enjoyed to familiarize with the sound of a guitar and sticks and they liked to sing along to their favourite, as well as new songs, with our special guest Mr Medd.

In Preschool 1 children were very busy creating friendship cards for staff at ISR and their loved ones at home.  Fine motor skills were exercised when stringing colourful heart shaped and macaroni strings in class and  lacing a pattern (snow, shape, snow, shape…) string at Ms Valda Art session.  The Preschool 1 and Toddlers also enjoyed a combined music session with Mr Medd – among the groovy tunes were: The Wheels on the Bus, Five Green and Speckled Frogs, and an original Pop Corn song!

In Preschool 2 we have been working on putting together the ‘I am Growing “ books and sharing them with a partner to reflect back on the whole UOI.  We were happy to witness the children’s ability to explain what they require to grow big and strong.  They are very eager to share these books with you during the upcoming PST conferences in Spring.  Finally, we have been busy making valentines for families and friends and, a BIG thanks to Sean and his family, whose efforts produced the beautiful Preschool2 “Love Post” in which we placed the cards! The children were very excited to receive these cards on Thursday afternoon.

We wish you a great Holiday and look forward to seeing you all after the Ski Break on February 25th 2013!

Let's Grow Together!

The preschool groups have been enthusiastic during this past week in both indoor and outdoor activities.  There have been discussions regarding love and friendships and during the Wednesday Preschool Assembly the children joined together links to form a colourful friendship chain to acknowledge their amity and togetherness.  To celebrate the 100th day of school the Preschool 1 children taught their ‘’monkey exercises’’ to the Preschool 2 and Toddlers!  The Preschool 2 children led the counting to 100! song so that we could begin to understand the concept of larger numbers and of the time that we have already spent at ISR this school year!

The Toddlers created a big poster by sorting and colouring pictures of boys and girls. They also have been busy sharing their love by cutting small and big hearts out of paper, painting them, making paper collages and sticking their hearts around the Preschool halls! They definitely have improved their cutting skills through these tasks as well as learned to find differences between small and big sized things in their surroundings and the world around us J

The Preschool 1 children have been continuing their work on their I am growing book which presents them with the opportunity for children to identify the stark difference of being a small baby to, now, being a tall Preschooler.  We once were small, and now we are tall... Let’s grow Together! We have: compared our hand print to that of a baby; identified our very own baby picture; described our family members and what makes our family unit; understood how old we are, and what our favorite color, food, animal and interests are; learned about the food pyramid and the importance of a balanced meal, rest, play and good hygiene; as well as recognized and verbalized our friendships with others.  We look forward to sharing our unique book with our friends and family!

In Arts, the Preschool 2 children cut people figures out of paper and attached legs and arms that could move. They each had a turn to demonstrate a movement and the rest of the children repeated the movement with their little paper puppet. The children came up with some really fun movements! This week the children also worked on understanding the concepts of direction and position, such as: on; under; above etc. They were asked to place a self-made plasticine lollipop in a variety of positions/directions and photos were taken of them in action. They did some writing afterwards. You are welcome to take a look at these projects on the display in our classroom.

Finally, the Preschool children really enjoyed participating in the grade 4 assembly where they learned some Bolliwood dance moves.  During the week we have also enjoyed playing outside and observing the sunrays bursting through the clouds!

This week all of Preschool has continued to explore what we need in order to grow big, healthy, strong and smart. We found out that it is very important to move and exercise and together we did some fun exercises during the preschool assembly. The children were very excited to move like snakes, monkeys, frogs and many other animals! We shared some cupcakes made by Preschool2 children to both strengthen the friendship between the children and remind ourselves that food like cupcakes stand at the top of the food pyramid and, therefore, we should eat just a little bit of it.:) On Friday morning we went to the gym to watch and listen to some students from the Latvian Academy of Music performing different musical instruments. Since these students will teach how to play these instruments to children from older grades, in future we look forward to hearing them more.

This week the Preschool2 children have worked on the food pyramid. The children have coloured in, cut out and looked for different kinds of food in magazines. Then, together, we all discussed where the items stand on the pyramid and we added them on to the display board.  The children also explored  the concept of healthy food by discussing about how much of it we should eat (the most, in between the most and the least, or just a little bit). The children did a great job of writing the categories for all the different foods on our food pyramid. We also asked the children about what their and their parent’s favourite food is and whether they can identify if it is healthy or not. It turned out that the majority of preschool families have very healthy eating habits!:)

During the week the Preschool 1 children focussed on good health and exercise and they chose specific exercises that they would like to lead during circle time and PE.  Our exercise monkey book was a lot of fun to colour and compile for the children to apply and revisit.  The group also discussed the concept of friendship and engaged in activities where they identify their own friends and friendships.  The Preschool 1 Children had an opportunity to participate in an orchestra during music class! Ms Ruta conducted in different volumes and groupings (bells, xylophones, shakers, triangle and tubes) and we learned to identify when, and how loud their group should play.  The children also took part in acting out a bear or rabbit roles during music.

This week Toddlers continued to discuss healthy eating habits. They worked on creating their very own apples by painting and lacing them. They practiced the famous saying in English: “An apple a day keeps the doctor away!”
Toddlers also worked on recognizing the differences between the boys and girls by reading different books, sorting photos, creating posters, colouring pictures with boys and girls and creating their very own boys and girls.
During outside time all children enjoyed exploring the different textures of snow, ice and water!
