January 21th-25th

The Preschool 1 children focused on the details of the food pyramid and pieced together a puzzle outlining the different proportions of a suggested healthy diet.  The children worked on their My Healthy Dinner activity that allowed them to use this new information to make a balanced choice when filling their plates with breads and grains, vegetables, fruits, meat, milk and sweets!   The children also differentiated vegetable from fruits during the IT lesson, danced to I Like to Move It! Move It during PE, and coloured and cut-out a lunch box and filled it with yummy fruit during Arts.  We have also enjoyed breathing in fresh air during some of our outside times!

The Preschool 1 and some of the preschool 2 children began work on the Foundation Phonics SfA (Success for All) programme.  The SfA helper Alphie, a friendly and knowledgeable crocodile puppet, helped introduce the two first sounds: ‘m’, the man marching on mountains; and ‘a’ Alphie asks for apples!  The children did very well and surprised Alphie with their great listening and thinking skills!

This week Preschool continued to explore the Unit of Inquiry ,,Let’s Grow Together’’:

Toddlers learned about healthy eating habits and how to stay healthy, choosing daily food, which helps them to grow up big and strong! During circle time they also shared their stories what they like to eat for breakfast. It was great to see them all working on project ,,I like to eat…’’ where the little ones could tell about their favorite food.

We also continued to talk about babies. During our Preschool assembly we had a special visitor – Ms Evita (Raimond’s mommy) who brought her little 10 months old baby girl Laima and shared photos that showed how she and Raimonds have grown month by month. In connection with this visit Toddlers worked on their own projects about babies – learning what do they need to grow up – clothes, food and, of course, love! We also learned some lullabies that help babies fall asleep!

January 14th - 18th, 2013

Let’s Grow Together!  This unit the Transdisciplinary theme: Who we are.

The central idea of the unit is: Children need to fulfil a variety of needs to grow.  The lines of inquiry include:
-          Daily habits and routines (hygiene, sleep, exercise, play, eating);
-          Balanced choices and their consequences;
-          Growth and development; and
-          Love and friendship
The Toddlers have begun to create and work on their projects about babies.  We have already started to discuss the essential needs of babies for:  milk, sleep and love! Toddlers have done a great job sorting photos of big kids and babies and they like to remind that they are not babies anymore.  They have come to the conclusion that they have grown a lot from evidence such as looking at the size of their hand prints and looking at the measuring chart. Some of them are excited to spend the first days without diapers and are practicing going on their potties by themselves! Next week we look forward to learning about the important details of a healthy diet, so that we all can grow even bigger and stronger!
This week the Preschool 1 children have been identifying a number of details and interests that make them a part of whom they are, including:  how old am I; what is my favourite colour; and what animals, foods, and activities I like.  Drawing, colouring, cutting and pasting activities addressed their fine motor skills in projects such as arranging an elephant family from biggest to smallest and making a family portrait. In art class the children also closely observed what their facial features are when they drew their own self portrait.
In Preschool 2, we have set up our own food shop. The children have had a lot of fun pretending to be customers and shop assistants. They have been exploring and sorting all the different kinds of food in the shop. This week several children shared their baby pictures. We had discussions about how we change while growing and what babies need to grow big. The children have decorated their writing journals for “Success for All” (SfA) and we are looking forward to have Alphie time starting from Monday!
All children are enjoying the tactile tables with bean, rice, oatmeal, and other new objects and textures to explore!
Finally, this week we had planned to go on a sledging field trip to Dzegužkalns, but unfortunately due to very cold weather conditions we decided to postpone it until another date when the weather is slightly warmer.  Please note that you will be informed regarding another date for the field trip closer to the time. Please also note that the permissions provided for the January 16th field trip will be valid for the rescheduled sledging field trip.
We wish you a cosy weekend with your family and wonderful children!
Stay warm! Stay healthy!
Yours truly,
Preschool team

Let's Grow Together!

Happy New Year and welcome back to ISR!

Now that our Winter Break is over we are ready to start to explore our PYP Unit of Inquiry (UoI) Let’s Grow Together!  This unit the Transdisciplinary theme: Who we are.

The central idea of the unit is: Children need to fulfil a variety of needs to grow.

 The lines of inquiry include:
-          Daily habits and routines (hygiene, sleep, exercise, play, eating);
-          Balanced choices and their consequences;
-          Growth and development; and
-          Love and friendship

On Wednesday we had an assembly for the children where Ms Sarmīte was welcomed by all the children as our special guest.  We compared tummies and discovered that Ms Sarmīte's tummy was different from the rest.  The children learned about a baby growing inside of her stomach!  Matīss also shared with the group that over the winter break his mummy, Ms Ieva, gave birth to a little baby brother!  Congratulations! We were all once babies and now we are growing!

This week the Toddlers focused on shapes, particularly the circle.

The Preschool 1 and 2  children have begun to create and work on a book I Am Growing.  Thank you to all families that have already provided baby photos of your child.

Finally, this week we also had a very large snow fall and the children really enjoyed looking at snowflakes under a magnifying glass, building snowballs and snow people, making snow angels, pulling one another on the sleds, running and falling in the snow, and helping the groundkeeper with clearing the snow from the pathways!  What great helpers!
