Preschool this week...

What a week!  Every day all Toddlers have practiced in preparation for the ISR Winter Festival on Thursday, where they performed a dance to the Scottish New Year’s tune of “Auld Lang Syne”, led by our guest star - bagpiper Kārlis Heimrāts.
Another winter activity was our gingerbread morning. Everyone had the chance to use different cookie cutters to make gingerbread cookies.  We used the first letters of our names and stars. Yummy!

We also decorated our classroom with a creative group project. On a big sheet of paper, using finger paints and stickers, Toddlers painted and decorated a Christmas tree and a Christmas elf!

And believe it or not – we were even visited by Santa Claus himself on Friday! He came to Toddlers and gave every Toddler a little present, a pencil case with their name and filled with candies.

On Wednesday we had a little party to say goodbye to our friend Albert. His mummy brought a delicious cake (a so called Swedish mud cake) and Albert received a goodbye present to remind him of us – a book with a picture of all his Toddler friends in Albert’s favourite shape – that of a car! We will miss you, Albert!
On Friday we had another reason to celebrate, Hanna’s names day. During the Library lesson Hanna shared Christmas candies and we watched a video of her favourite Nursery Rhyme “Twinkle, twinkle little star”.

Already for the past few weeks Toddlers have worked very hard on their top secret Christmas surprise, which has now finally been revealed: they created beautiful greeting cards with angels by using finger paints and glue for all their teachers and parents.

And last, but not least, we want to mention how much Toddlers have enjoyed the snow outside and regarding this we would like to make a little Christmas wish to you, dear parents:

Please make sure that your child has got waterproof mittens that he/she can put on easily. During the break practice putting them on and talk about why we need mittens when it’s cold. (And don’t forget to label them with your child’s name!)
Now all that’s left to say is: We wish you a Merry Christmas and a Happy New year!

Preschool 1

The week started off with an interesting field trip to the candle making factory, CAN DE LA, at Anderejosta.  We learned about and touched the soja wax and flowers that are used to make these lovely scented candles.  Children had the opportunity to make small circular flower and wax discs which can be used to make clothing, or the room, a lovely aroma. Thank you to Otto’s mummy for suggesting this wonderful experience!

During the week the Preschool 1 students enjoyed making tree decorations for the school and their homes.  We really enjoyed getting our fingers into some gingerbread dough as we formed cookies, big and small, and after baking them the students particularly liked to decorate the big bell shaped cookie which they ate up in a hurry after the Winter Festival concert!  During the week the students participated in the Winter Festival rehearsals and did a wonderful job in performing Vilks un Kaza, or the goat and the wolf – a game the Latvian’s play during the Winter Solstice to help the darkness (the wolf) catch the light (the goat) so that new light can break through.  Finally, many students had a chance to meet and speak with Santa, and thank him for sharing a lovely treat with them.

Wishing you all a safe, light, and enjoyable winter break and we look forward to seeing you again in the New Year!

This week has been full of great events, however, we have been so busy that we have not taken much photos to share. We baked and decorated some gingerbread cookies on Monday. We had great fun making the icing out of powdered sugar and milk and putting some sprinkles, dried cranberries and candy on gingerbread people or angels. They looked gorgeous and tasted very yummy! Throughout the week we made Christmas tree decorations, cards and other wintery and Christmassy ornaments to decorate our school.  A lot of time was spent on rehearsals for the Winter Festival. Children made their own cone hats and crowns for the performance.  Finally, on Thursday, the big day was finally here! Students did a brilliant and wonderful performance during the Winter Festival show.  Oh, and we celebrated Sophie’s birthday with some cupcakes made by Sophie and her daddy. On Friday Santa visited us and gave as all a present.  Finally, we said good-bye and farewell to Agnes and her family.  Good luck to you and take care!  We will miss you!

Happy Holidays to all!

December -6

This week we started with our weekly Monday assembly, where we repeated some Nursery Rhymes and learned some new ones.  Some of the fun links you can enjoy include:
1,2, Buckle My Shoe:
Pictures that refer to the ‘’big fat hen’’, a pillow used in lace making:
 Baa Baa Black Sheep:
There was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly:
Row row row your boat:

Every day all preschool classes came together to rehearse and practice for Friday’s assembly!  Finally, on Friday, Toddlers, Preschool 1 & 2 performed their Nursery Rhyme performance for the whole school!  The assembly was continued by a Zumba session to raise money for the fire-fighter families who were affected by the tragedy in Zolitūde in November.  The whole school community took part in dances and movements and for about 40 minutes positive energy and power were spread all around!
During the week we all were busy making Christmas tree decorations for both trees – the one in our Pre-school area and the big one in the main hall.  Have a look, it looks so beautiful and Christmassy.
On Monday we opened the first doors on our Toddler advent calendar presented to us by Jurijs’ mommy. The children enjoy exploring the pictures behind the each door and eagerly wait for Christmas every day.
All week long Toddlers have been rehearsing their favourite Nursery Rhymes for our first whole school assembly (we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did!), and we also practiced a dance with jingle bells for the Winter festival. Thank you Mr Medd for supporting us throughout our rehearsals!
This week we worked on some special arts & crafts projects for next week, but we will keep it top secret for now!
On Friday, after our first whole Preschool assembly, Toddlers enjoyed joining all the big children and teachers in the Zumba session. They reflected on what they had experienced by saying “FUN!” and “JUMP!” for the rest of the day. We can certainly say that our new favourite word is “FUN!” And we definitely had fun playing in the first snow during our outside recess on Friday!

Preschool 1 children started the week by celebrating Marat’s birthday – Happy Birthday Marat!  Preschool 1 enjoyed making decorations for the trees and the rooms and we would like to express our thanks to Lorenzo’s, Marat’s, and Alisa’s mummies and nanny for helping with the lovely ornament workshop!  Also a special thank you to Laura, Raimond’s aunt, who read a lovely book to the Preschool 1 children last week!

Preschool 2
This week Thursday we said good-bye and farewell to Miss Sandra who was in our class for the last 6 weeks.  It was a pleasure to have her with us for this time and we will surely remember her!  Miss Sandra gave us a nice calendar with memories of her time spent with us.

November 25 - 29

First of all we would like to thank all families for coming to the Student Led Conferences, they were a great success and a wonderful opportunity for the children to share their learning.
This week we have continued to explore Nursery Rhymes and have been rehearsing for our whole school assembly led by Preschoolers and Toddlers. Next Friday, December 6th, we will finish off this Unit of Inquiry by celebrating our learning with a Nursery Rhymes show.
Reminder: Winter is approaching fast now and as the weather gets cold, wet and unpredictable, please make sure your child has appropriate clothes (warm and waterproof) for outside play time. Also check whether your child has extra socks/tights and trousers in the cubbies upstairs, since we might need to change on wet days.

Thank you to all Toddler families for participating in our Student Led Conferences. Having you in the class and sharing their life in Toddlers with you meant a lot to our little students!
This week Toddlers have started exploring basic colours and have reflected on them by creating a path of colourful shapes. This was a Toddler led inquiry and completely their own initiative. Everyone joined and had great fun jumping from one colourful shape to another.
This Wednesday was very special for some of our Toddlers because they saw not only the first snow of this season, but for some of them it was the first time they saw snow in their life!

Preschool 1

During the week the Preschool 1 students learnt a new nursery rhyme and made a watercolour poster stages with interactive stick figures to play out the rhyme:

Jack and Jill
Went up the hill
To fetch a pail of water,
Jack fell down
And broke his crown
And Jill came tumbling after.

We had fun making play dough together and smelling, touching and mixing all the ingredients together!  Students also reflected upon earlier rhymes about spiders and made spiders out of the play dough, counted and added eight legs and even made a web for the spider to live in.  During the week students have also been learning a new song for the upcoming Winter Festival and already are so excited about the event!

Preschool 2

With all the Winter celebrations approaching fast, we have started preparing for that wonderful time of the year this week! The children have been working on making our own Advent Calendar in our classroom. This project is initiated and led by Miss Sandra, and we all are pretty excited about the whole process of it: each of us making a house with a number on it and waiting for a chance to open it and see what surprise is awaiting us each day until Christmas! Thank you, Miss Sandra for getting us into Christmas spirit already! A lot of time, including most of the Specialist classes, is being spent on preparing for two big on-stage events: performing Nursery Rhymes at the whole school Assembly on 6th of December and the Winter Festival on December 12th.
