September 24-29

"Oh, no! Here come toddlers with their dirty hands!". J This could be the line of the week as little ones had been busy playing with sand and water (goop), finding shells, sticks and whatever else in it. During their free choice play time they also had a chance to look for coins hidden in the play-dough. It has been a week full of surprises and fun.
Preschool 1 enjoyed taking a walking field trip to the river Daugava.  There we observed the water, ships, sailboats, seagulls, ducks, and appreciated the rare roses still in bloom!  The weather was pleasant and on the walk we stopped under an oak tree to sing a song about acorns and even collected pocketfulls of acorns from the ground!  The preschool 1 children continued to learn about the basic shapes and created colourful smooth, rough, sparkly and soft squares in Art with Ms. Valda.  Some of the books we enjoyed included: Commotion in the Ocean by Gilles Andreae and David Wojtowycz; Goldfish by Raintree; and One to Ten and Back Again by Nick Sharratt and Sue Heap. During the week there were many opportunities to sing songs relating to the Baltic Wonders! theme and some of the songs included: I Am a Happy Fisherman; Slippery Fish; and I Have a Tiny Turtle.
In Preschool 2, we had some discussions earlier in the school year about why we need to wash our hands regularly even if they seem clean and the students just kept wondering - why? Therefore, we went to the Science room to look in the microscope to discover what germs look like! Miss Maria added some pink colour so that when we looked at the germs we could see them immediately because they all looked pink! In the book, Miss Ieva read to us, germs were all the different colours and shapes but all of them were really ugly… We also have started to read our Beach Book and talk about similarities and differences between various beaches, activities one can do at the beach and safety measures people need to take while enjoying activities in the water. Thank you for your help in making the pages for the book with your child! On Thursday, we had our second field trip to the forest and we all truly enjoyed it! The children had free play time in the beginning. After lunch, we split into two groups and while the first group went for an expedition in woods with Lauma and Aija, the other group did some drawing with Anna and Zinta; then the groups swapped. We had a light snack right before going back to school.

September 17-21

The preschool groups have continued to explore the sea’s properties, sea life, and details of the coastal environment.  The newest addition is a wonderful boat that has sailed into the Preschool area and the Preschool 2 children have done a splendid job in painting the vessel blue and creating and mounting a white rectangular sail!

Preschool 1 and 2 have two new classmates, brothers. Welcome, Ivan and Pavel! Next week, however, Preschool 2 will have to say good-bye to Annika.  We will miss you, Annika!

The Preschool 2 group worked on making lighthouses and spoke about what they are for. The children had many ideas of what is inside of a lighthouse: starting with the Big bad wolf and fish, and finishing with a person who has a computer so that he could better watch the boats so that they would be safe. Preschool 2 have also started the SfA program and have already gone through the first four sounds: /m/, /a/, /s/ and /d/. The students have also stated to practice to work together with a partner which is often a challenging thing to learn.

During the week the Preschool 1 children reviewed the circle and the square.  The children started to look for triangle shapes relating to the Baltic Wonders theme such as spotting triangular sails on sail boats and triangular flags.  The children are also starting to recognize these different shapes in their own environment.  The Very Silly Shark, by Jack Tickle, has introduced various sea life to the Preschool 1 children including the dolphin, shark, octopus, crab, swordfish, turtle and seahorse.  In the past two weeks the group has already celebrated two birthdays!  Oliver and Maxim are 4 years old!  Congratulations!

The Toddler group has also welcomed a new Toddler student Konstance. We are happy to have you Konstance! During this week toddlers worked on the arts project ,,Deep Under the Sea’’. What fun it is to be like a little artist! Painting, gluing and such joy creating artwork!

We are looking forward to what next week brings!

September 10 - 14

This week preschool children have been busy exploring, observing and learning about the environment around them. A lot of new exciting and wonderful memories have been created. One of the highlights of this week has been Laurie Berkner song and dance "The Goldfish". Children loved to pretend they are fish swimming in the sea.

Toddlers enjoyed playing with water and boats as well as exploring various kinds of artifacts from Baltic beach like pebbles, shells, sticks, sand. On Wednesday aftternoon Henry's mom came and read one of Henry's favourite books "The Pout - Pout Fish" by Deborah Diesen. Little ones enjoyed having a visitor! Thank you, Jennifer :)

The main focus for the Preschool 1 children this week was the SQUARE.  The shape appeared in several projects, art work and circle time.  They also enjoyed singing and dancing along to the nursery rhyme: I Am A Happy Fisherman!

In Preschool2, the event of the week has been going on the fieldtrip to the woods. The children learned how to be good friends to the forest by being caring to nature. We had so much fun running and climbing up hills and trees, exploring the insects and mushrooms. We also listened to the various sounds we can hear in a forest as well as tried to determine how the forest smells. Really looking forward to the next visit to the forest in just 2 weeks! And this week we also went on a walking fieldtrip to Daugava to observe the environment near the river.

September 3-7

In Toddlers, we would like to welcome our new friend Mert in our class! We are happy you joined us! This week little ones have been busy playing with water, boats, shells, "reading" books in the "under the Sea" tent as well as working hard to decorate "Beach poster" with nice and colourful fish and sand.
Preschool 1 children took a walking field trip to the river Daugava and observed the water, waves, sun, ships, sail boats, and seagulls.  The children have also been learning about the CIRCLE as one of the many shapes that we see around us on a daily basis. Ms. Anna was a caring and thoughtful friend and cleaned Swimmy’s environment.
In Preschool 2, this week we have still been learning about what lives in the Baltic Sea. We made some seagulls and seals and fish you can see on the display board in the hallway. The children have been exploring the wooden pieces and sea shells on sensory tables they collected during the fieldtrip to Saulkrasti beach. We also learned how seals talk to each other – they bark! We have been working on extending some patterns. We are learning how to become even better friends to each other by practising how to express our feelings the right way. We are looking forward to the next week when we will start the SFA program and go on our first trip to the Woods!
