Sprouting Up May 7 -11 2012

The weather has been appropriate for the many activities the Preschoolers’ have been involved in this week and the children continue to engage in the Sprouting Up unit of inquiry by exploring books, toys and maintaining their mini gardens that they water regularly.  The specialist classes also focus on including this theme within their class work.

During the week the Toddlers observed how much their lawn has grown and they enjoyed hiding little mushrooms among the long blades of grass!

The Preschool 1 children took part in a walking field trip around the neighborhood to observe the evidence of spring including: buds and leaves on trees, flowers, ferns uncurling, many birds by the river Daugava, pollen floating in the air, and the warm rays of the sun!

The Preschool 2 children participated in an outdoor nature project where they observed and drew local bird-cherry trees and dandelions with oil pastels.

One of our highlights has been the field trip to Bulduri Horticulture Centre, followed by a play and a picnic at the Dzintaru playground May 8th 2012!  The many plants, and things related to planting, that we observed at the greenhouse, or hot house, included: glass walls and roof (to let in the sunlight), soil, pots, seeds, seedlings, watering hoses, and many different flowers (tulips, hyacinths, daffodils, tiger lilies, roses, asters, morning glories, daisies, marigolds, ferns, violets, delphiniums, carnations, poppies, pansies, iris, phlox, and birds of paradise!). There was a lovely outdoor garden with many nicely maintained flower beds that held a variety of tulips, hyacinths, and pansies.  The children were excellent observers and understood to only pick the dandelions!

Finally, the Preschool Teachers would like to thank all of the parents for the wonderful Teacher/Staff Appreciation Day breakfast, lunch, and presents!!!  We are very lucky to have such wonderful students and parents and you have made us feel very special!
