The Mitten

The Preschool children enjoyed the Once Upon A Time… unit of inquiry from the end of October through to the end of December!  This unit presented the children with opportunities to hear fairy tales for the first time, re-tell the sequence of stories, learn about different characters within fairy tales and other stories, learn about the meaning or messages they convey, and participate in dress-up and role play.

The Mitten, a story about an old man who went for a walk in the snowy forest, to find a Christmas tree, accidentally dropped his mitten while taking a rest.  Various animals, one by one, spotted the mitten and thought… what a lovely place to celebrate Christmas!   First the buzzy bees moved into the cozy mitten.  Then along came some squeaky mice who asked: who lives in this mitten and may we join you? The mice were followed by hopping rabbits, running foxes, howling wolves and, finally, stomping bears.  All of these creatures moved into the mitten, however, when the last bear squeezed his way into the mitten it broke!  Along came the old man who kindly offered for all of the animals to celebrate Christmas in his warm and welcoming home.  They all agreed that the more we get together , together, together, the happier we’ll be – for your friends are my friends and my friends are your friends – the more we get together the happier we’ll be!
