Preschool 2

During the last two weeks we have been visiting people who work at ISR to learn more about their jobs, and we also had some of our parents visit and share what they do with us.  Mr. Renars visited first and helped us assemble a cleaning trolley and then we went to explore his two “secret” rooms. The children learned that his job is “fixing things at school”. We also visited the school office to find out more about what happens there: Miss Zinta “takes care of various documents and meets new families joining the school”. The office is the also the workday home for Miss Julija and Miss Ginta, both of whom take care of the “school’s money”.  We were impressed with how many different custom stamps they have in the office! The children also learned more about our librarian’s job.  As mentioned above, we have also had parents come in and share what they do, and it truly has been a lot of fun! The children had a chance to visit an osteopath and also graduate from a university (we had real graduation caps and diplomas) as well as become familiar with what a manager in a famous cosmetics company does. And then to top it all off, we went on a fieldtrip to the donut shop “Ze Donats”. The fieldtrip was set up by one of our parents – thank you very much! The children had a chance to decorate their own doughnut by dipping it in frosting first and then putting on sprinkles. They also visited the donut shop’s kitchen and were allowed to go behind the counter where all the colorful and appetizing doughnuts are displayed. And, of course, what would a visit to a place like that be without eating the yummy doughnuts? The children learned that the people who work at the doughnut shop all do different jobs: cooks make the doughnuts, sales clerks sell them, others deliver the ingredients, and bookkeepers count the money that comes in from selling the doughnuts.  Thanks to everybody who is helping to make this UOI so much fun!

Jobs that people do!

In this Unit of Inquiry, Jobs That People Do, the pre-schoolers have been learning about chefs, cooks, bakers, and hairdressers.  We enjoyed a special visit from a hairdresser who showed us many tools and products that are used in hair dressing salons.  Some children came out of the visit with new hair styles including curls, braids, and spikey hair! During this time we have also explored the jobs that people do in schools including the director, administration, librarian, maintenance workers, teachers, and even students!  The following weeks will present the opportunity to find out more about the police, fire fighters, airport staff, construction workers, doctors, nurses, veterinarians, and more!  We are also looking forward to our intended field trips to the airport and the fire station.

The Mitten

The Preschool children enjoyed the Once Upon A Time… unit of inquiry from the end of October through to the end of December!  This unit presented the children with opportunities to hear fairy tales for the first time, re-tell the sequence of stories, learn about different characters within fairy tales and other stories, learn about the meaning or messages they convey, and participate in dress-up and role play.

The Mitten, a story about an old man who went for a walk in the snowy forest, to find a Christmas tree, accidentally dropped his mitten while taking a rest.  Various animals, one by one, spotted the mitten and thought… what a lovely place to celebrate Christmas!   First the buzzy bees moved into the cozy mitten.  Then along came some squeaky mice who asked: who lives in this mitten and may we join you? The mice were followed by hopping rabbits, running foxes, howling wolves and, finally, stomping bears.  All of these creatures moved into the mitten, however, when the last bear squeezed his way into the mitten it broke!  Along came the old man who kindly offered for all of the animals to celebrate Christmas in his warm and welcoming home.  They all agreed that the more we get together , together, together, the happier we’ll be – for your friends are my friends and my friends are your friends – the more we get together the happier we’ll be!

Preschool 2

It’s great to be back at school and together again! We have started our new Unit of Inquiry “Jobs that People Do...” by learning about what a chef’s job is about. First, we solved the mystery of where our hot lunches come from. The children thought that either the teachers prepared them or that the lunch lady cooks them in the lunch room. They were really surprised to discover that the lunches are first prepared in a restaurant and only then are they delivered to our school. We spent the rest of the week getting familiar with various kitchen utensils including peelers and graters. The children also made their own pizza recipe books. Finally, we finished up the first week by having a pyjama day with a movie and popcorn in the afternoon.

We are planning to spend the next two weeks on exploring jobs that people do in our school.

First week together with Toddlers in 2012!

First week after Winter Break has been exciting and fun. We have started our new Unit of Inquiry "Jobs That People Do." This week toddlers have been exploring cooking. They've looked at what "instruments" are needed to prepare food. Little ones especially enjoyed watching how a teacher peals a carrot and then grates it. Suddenly we had many tiny hands reaching for carrots and asking for more!
We also celebrated Jāzep's birthday this week. Toddlers really like birthday parties.
On Thursday they had a chance to make cookies. They were proud to wear their "shef's hats" and be real cooks. How wonderful to be back at school!
